I wrote this song when it seemed like all the big stars were dying - Bowie, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Glen Frey, Tom Petty - and I was thinking about what it must feel like to be a huge star at the end of your life. It seemed to me it must feel the same as anyone else nearing the end, feeling the fragility of life and reflecting back on all they had done. Paper Lanterns was born of this.
